The challenge
Where things stood
Loan officers were manually re-keying application data from paper forms into three separate systems, cross-checking credit history by phone, and routing approvals over email threads that regularly stalled for days. Members were waiting up to a week for a decision on straightforward loans.
The approach
What we did
- Mapped the full loan approval workflow end-to-end, including every handoff and approval gate
- Built an n8n pipeline that ingests application data directly from the member portal
- Connected the pipeline to the credit reference bureau API for automatic history checks
- Added a rules engine that auto-approves low-risk applications and routes edge cases to a human loan officer with a pre-filled recommendation
- Set up Slack notifications so officers only get pinged when a decision actually needs a human

- Average processing time dropped from 5 days to under 4 hours
- Loan officers now handle 3× the application volume without added headcount
